Forgetting something, aren't I? Yes, the winner of the quiz - a shared win this time for Wraith and Unkempt, who both got 3 of the 4 questions right. Well done chaps.

1. Where was R. J. Mitchell (the designer of the Spitfire) from?
Southampton
Stoke-on-Trent
Castle Bromwich

2. What was Douglas Bader flying when he had his famous crash that cost him his legs?
Hart
Bulldog
Tiger Moth

3. Douglas Bader led the Tangmere Wing. Who was his contemporary in charge of the Biggin Hill Wing?
Al Deere
'Johnnie' Johnson
Adolph Malan
Guy Gibson

4. Which of the following was not an RAF aeroplane?
Oxford
Manchester
Stirling
None, they are all aeroplanes

 Answers below

.

.

.

1. Stoke-on-Trent. Supermarine were based in Southampton, and Castle Bromwich had a well known Spitfire factory.

2. Bristol Bulldog. The Hawker Hart is another well known plane of the early 30s. Most people know Bader was flying a biplane, so the Tiger Moth was put in to mislead.

3. Adolph Malan ('Sailor' Malan). Johnson didn't lead a Wing until much later at Kenley, Gibson was a bomber leader, Deere was a contemporary of Bader and Malan.

4. None. The Oxford is a small twin-engine plane which doubled up as a bomber in emergencies (e.g. Iraq), the Manchester was the twin-engined precursor of the Lancaster, the Stirling was another four-engined heavy bomber.
